That is the answer: there is nothing special about linux - no blue screens, no general protection errors, restarts after installing anything. Just operating system which _operates_.

I use linux/ unix/ freebsd... and they just work. I build/ configure/ troubleshoot Win9x/ NT all day long and I do not want that to come home to. The box has not been rebooted / shutdown in 3 months... when I went on vacation and did not trust anyone here to guard me equipment... I am sure I am not the only one that hears "can you show me this cut and paste trick I keep hearing about..." or other user tricks of failure to learn how to boot/ shutdown, run a specific APP, and just a general useof a PC.

We have been runing Linux (Debian) for the past 4 years .We are an isp in Perth Western Australia we have 20+ servers all runing Linux and we have never been hacked in any way. Most of the servers have got uptimes of over 12 months
But we have two windows box both runing win98 and we are lucky to keep them up longer than 2 days with out some sort of problem .
The only thing windows is good for in my mind is playing games and linux is catching up in the game area as well
Linux Rules!!!!

People say that win os's will be phased out within the next few years and that unix would be the superior os because Linux is becoming easier to use. The installation software and the desktop is constantly improving and will very soon be easier to use then windows. It has cleaner multitasking, better online support (you just can't beet the unix man pages), and more flexability. Once linux is properly setup it can be easier to use then windows and with all the same capabilities. This is because there is less chance of linux crashing and some of the new desktop environments for the X windows system even have a built in web browser like windows 98.

Personally, I don't think that they will be phased out, but less popular instead. Linux and Microsoft OSes all have their good and bad points. It all comes down to what you want to do. Linux is a VERY affordable alternative which runs more stablethanwhat NT would in most cases (heard of Linux systems being up for years without a reboot), but if you are a new administrator for a small company, you will most likely use a Microsoft OS because of the more defined GUI. Linux is catching up withthe userfriendly side of things as well. I use both Linux and NT, and both have advantages and disadvantages, but I prefer Linux.
