WiFi in a Condo

By peetree ·
My neighbor posed a question to me. He inquired since I have a DSL connection would I be willing to have him access it via a wireless connection. I said sure. However, there's the issue of going through the block walls, not to mention our metal studs; which are an issue. The scenario being he is located diagonal of me, but not above my next-door neighbor. His unit is above my next-door neighbor's next-door neighbor. Is this possible? It sounds intriguing.

It is possible

by mjd420nova In reply to WiFi in a Condo

It would take some work with different routers and antenna confirurations, but it is possible. It might take a good tech a while to get the combination right, but you could do it. I'd start with a unit that boasts long range and also a card for the computer that also boasts extended range. It's not so much the distance involved, but the walls and their composition.

do a site survey

If your pc is a laptop, most wifi adapters have a site survey utility so you can see if you get signal over at his place.

the wall is cinderblock it won't work. glass or sheetrock it probably will.

How cheap is your neighbor?

by NickNielsen In reply to WiFi in a Condo

Tell him to get his own connection. DSL Ultra (6 Mbps) without other services runs about the same as most cable companies charge for their high-speed connection. BellSout\\\\\\\\The new AT&T is still running the 3 for $99 special: home service, long distance, and either DSL Ultra or Dish.

As for your question, it's possible. It won't be reliable, but it's possible.
