Win 2k PC Won't Boot

By jda ·
I have a pc on a small network the won't boot I get the following error:
"Windows 2000 could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
It goes thru:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\BOOTVID.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\system.alt
and then goes back to the error message.

Then it asks for the disk or push "r" to repair - neither of which does anything. That's all that shows on screen.

In my opinion some device or peripheral is not supporting the setup process. I m saying this becaz i had the same experience installing 2000 on an AMD Athalon machine which had a builtin VGA CARD and it was causing the setup to halt in the restarting process.

If you are able to boot the system to a command promt and access the file system I think this may help you.

Article Q307545 at the Microsoft site works with a similer problem. I was able to use the information as a guide to restore a W2k system that would not boot. You basically copy and paste files from the REPAIR folder TO CONFIG folder.

I would agree about the virus software, if possible go into recovery if you had made any recovery disks for this system, if not the only other thing to do is count any loss and just rebuild the operating system. Since it does not want to repair, your only option is to rebuild the system and keep a backup of your files.
