Win 95 Log off Freeze

By grinstb ·
We are running an Nt 4.0 server with W95 clients and are having a problem with the shutdown option close allprograms and log on as a new user. When this field is selected the computer starts the log off process and then freezes and you are forced to do a hard reboot.

Any thoughts on the cause would be appreciated.

I've seen the same problems with Win9x when the BIOS Power Management is turned on. Disabling Power Management has usually fixed the lockup problems.

Have you checked to see whether active desktop is installed as this has caused us many problems when trying to shut down. If so deactivate it and windows should log off fine.

I've also seen this problem when APM is turned on in the BIOS. Disable it, go to the Control Panel and run Add New Hardware to remove APM. You may also need to edit the system.ini file and remove the reference to power.drv.

I went in to the same problem and was caused by Norton Antivirus when it had selected AUTOPROTECT ON. If you have any kind of AntiVirus I recommend you start by uninstalling them...

If you are running IE 4.01 SP1, there is a known shut down problem with it. We had several systems that would lock up when using any option on the "shutdown" menu. After installing SP2 the problems disappeared. See Microsoft Q226988 for a more detailed information.
