Win 98 and rebooting after shutdown

    Locked

    by zlitocook ·

Ok here it is, I work at shriners hospital and they use win 95 and nt servers. One department uses win98 and I tryed everything that microsoft says to try to get this to stop. The computer will reboot as soon as you go through the shut down. There is nothing running in the back ground, no logs or antivirus programs. I went to the mainboard web site and there is nothing in the bios or cmos that will do this. They are using 98 SE and I can shut the computer down with the on off switch from the power supply. Microsoft had me do every thing from disable fast start up to removing registry keys with no help. Its a ibm clone with a amd 400 mghz cpu, 128 mb ram, scsi scanner, connected to an to a lan with ethernet 10 base. Hey I’m not proud I willtake any help:)

Im not exactly familair with this sort of problems but you might have a jumper on your motherboard that you can move/remove that may solve this problem. Contact your motherboard manufacturer and ask them about jumpers and could it cause this problem. I hope this helps.

First answer is all i can think of too. Sometimes there’s a wake on lan jumper, but usually that can be disabled in the bios. How many machines do this? Could it be a bad video card, sometimes they retain voltage and can cause boot problems. Or maybe a bad switch?

I tryed a known good video card and the switch checked out good with my meter. And the main board maker said they have never had a problem with win98.

Im only quessing that its an ATX form factor MB which may have a power supply with a circuit that will act as an on off switch. It one of the wires that come from the on/off switch to the motherboard that signals the computer to turn on when you press that button. Its pin#14 the PS on lead that will determine a power on status. It seems that some how this is being reactivated on a power down/reboot situation making it believe it has been turned on again. I would change the powersupply first toeliminate that. Then the connevction on the m/b from the switch, let me know

I did put in a new power supply, thats when I found out about the problem. The girl who uses the computer said it has aways done that, after a few other questions I changed out the main board cable for for the connection too.The reason I changed thep/s is because the old one was noisy. No good there to. I still think its software related some how. Because the system just reboots, it dose not go through the post like a cold boot its more like instead on clicking shut down you click on restart. I think it something to do with Microsoft.

I did replace the p/s and main board connections from it. It dose have wake on lan but if removed it dose not stop the problem. This is the only computer with Win98 on it. I was told that if they go through the shut down process a few times it will shut down compleatly, tho I have tryed it and it would not. I have Microsoft stumped, heh I like it but it dose not help my user. Should I back up thier info and reinstall? They said no they need thier computer 24/7. It is networked!

You say that the only problem you are having is that the computer will not shutdown normally; that you can shut it down if needed by hitting the main power switch at the back of the computer. I assume that you are a network tech and that this is a problem that indeed is baffling to you and to us. I applaud all that you have tried thus far but I have been told that you should check the memory chips as well.

However, you have been told that the unit must be online 24/7 and the operator of this unit has told you that ” It’s always done that”. What would I do?….Leave it alone. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it has been the motto that carries me through the day. If you want to shut this unit down for periodic maintenance you are able to do so without problems and therefore there is no problem. Any other time the unit is up and running fine. Don’t rock the boat…Leave it alone. Duplicate the problem on your own time if you must.

True I like your answer. The folks who use it wont like it. But if I can get it to do the same thing on a test computer I can try a lot of diffrent things.
