Win-98 Device Manager

By blinmdd ·
When in a safe mode in Win-98, under ControlPanel/System/Device Manager/HD controller, I got 5 lines of each :
- primary IDE controller
- secondary IDE controller.
Want to get rid of them.System doesn't allow
us to do that.

Safe mode limits your abilities in DEVICE MANAGER. If you are having startup problems and can't boot clean into Windows, you have to clean up the startup before messing with the drive configurations. Once in safe mode, START/RUN WINCFG.exe. Turn off all of the startup programs, check your config.sys and autoexec.bat to be sure you NEED all the items listed.
Once you reboot in clean, remove all of the drives listed in DEVICE MANAGER including busmaster drivers. When you reboot, you should have a fresh clean load for your drives.
Go back to the wincfg and turn on your startup items one at a time. Reboot for each item you turn on to be sure you still boot clean.

You should be able to delete all 10 entries - don't leave any. Click on each entry, and select "Remove". When you restart the computer, it should detect new hardware and reinstall the correct driver. You may need to insert the Win98 CD or a diskette if requested.
