Win 98 Second Addition

By istimo ·
On an unattended machine, on power down and reboot, how do I get to the Desktop bypassing the network sign on screen? These units are connected to an AS 400 and go thru a power down and session reconnect once aq week.

You can use the Tweakui app from your OEM version of WIN98 or download it from Microsoft. When you make changes in this program you can set the PC to login automatically. However, it will have to be the same User each time. You also have to make sure the option to clear login name is not turned on. You need the login name to be in the login box when booting up. You will need to turn off the option to get the login banner update from the network if you have one.

The answer is certainly the TWEAKUI powertoy. Here is some more information on it. On your Win98SE CD there is a folder \tools\reskit\powertoy There should be a file called tweakui.inf. Right click on that file and hit install. Run quickly through the install. Should take about 1 minute. Go to Control Panel and there will be an icon for Tweakui. When you open it there will be several tabs accross the top. Scroll over to the Network tab and select the automatic network login. Put in the username and password. This will allow it to automatically login. You can also zip this folder and send it to whatever location and walk someone through those simple steps. Word of caution... The password is not encrypted in anyway. It is stored in the registry without encryption!
