Windows 98 EXIT hangs up before Finishe

When I shut off this computer that has Win 98 SE it stops at the first screen. What causes this? I have reinstalled Twice. What can I do to FIX this?

You need to go to the Windows update site and download the Win98 SE shutdown update.
This will fix it.

Hi, there are a number of possible causes for the shutdown problem ranging from a faulty device driver to a configuration conflict. Microsoft published a lengthy checklist of possibilties specific to 98se.

You can do the windows update, if the problem still exists afterwards, go to start, run and type msconfig…then disable fast shutdown and reboot the system…now try to do shutdown and see if that helps…if not, do an msconfig and go to the startup tab, then turn off three things at a time and reboot and then try shutdown. Only do 2-3 at a time to be able to figure out which one causes the conflict with your shutdown.

There are updates to Win98 that should correct this problem for you. just click on the upgrade98 in your start menu and it will take you to the WEB site.

I know – U CAN UPDATE,……. but …….. UNHELPFOOLL!!!
I had have one problem like this one, but when i install new processor (400 to 800) this problem gone.
I recomend u smth like this:
1)KILL ALL YOUR DATA AT HDD (1-FORMAT, 2-FDISK, 3-FORMAT(twice or tripple))
2)BOOTup from system disk
3)make C: drive bootable and system
4)restart from HDD
5)type at the prompt C:\>SMARTDRV 16384
6) then install Windows (w SMARTDRV)

This is most likely a driver issue – 3Com NIC’s are nototious for this. Add-in sound cards can also be a likely suspect. Also, if you have an HP6200 Series scanner connected, you need to push the green Scan button on the scanner – the PC will then shut down immediately (this is HP’s technical fix). I would start by disconnecting from the network and then start/shutdown – if it works, then it’s the NIC. Next, disable sound (remove card), and start/shutdown. If you have other cards installed (modem, etc.), or any USB devices, try them one at a time until you find the culprit. Then, call tech support at the manufacturer and they should be able to get you fixed.

Have you downloaded and installed the Win 98 SE Shut down suplement ?

If you have not done that, try this first.

You can download it from Windows Update site.

Just click on Start button and select Windows Update.

This often happens if you are using a bad or old driver. I have had this problem particularly with Display board drivers, network card drivers and mouse drivers. Try to visit those respective sites on the internet and download the newest versions oftheir drivers. Once you’ve got the drivers install them according to the installation guide.

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System tools, and then click System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

On the General tab, click Advanced.

Click the Disable Fast Shutdown check box to clear it, click OK, and thenclick OK again.

Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Hi,
I just ran into the same problem and here is what I did.

Check Automatic Skip Driver Agent to see if there are any ASD critical operation failures

Unchecked everything except ‘systray” from startup [Start-program- Acessories-system tool-System Information-system configuration utility]
Reinstalled WIN98se shutdown Patch. If you are online, click-Start-Window Update- Product Update- dowload PAtch.
If you are running Antivirus, update it.

All the other replies have useful hints, just to add my two cents, sometimes updating the mother board BIOS does the trick.

Try unistalling the sound driver or printer driver. I have the same trouble with my sound card a CMI 8330(Audio Excel PnP 310)
other cards my do the same. The problem most likely is a driver conflict when unloading which will not show up in the conflict manager as the driver proberly works fine normaly.

Lots of helpful answers already listed and, as already stated, there are many things that can cause this problem. To add to the one about a bios update–this problem can also be caused by using a third-party bios overlay, such as the ones that are installed when your hard drive is too large to be recognized by the current system bios. It may help if you give a few more details about your system.

I agree with answer #1, but in my experience that does not always work. Sometimes the easiest way to fix something is right under your nose. If you goto C:\Windows\system\logow.sys and open with MSpaint, and say edit select all and then delete andpaint it all black and then save 99% of the time this has worked.

PS. this was taught to me by somebody at Microsoft.

During shutdown, a WM_DEVICECHANGE message is broadcast to all top-level windows. This broadcast informs each window of a DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE event. If a window does not respond to the broadcast system message, the computer may (will) hang. TheMicrosoft fix does not work 100% for this problem. If truth, my machine was much worse after the download and install of this ‘fix’. I have resolved it just by alternating my shutdown…e.g. between ‘click’ and ‘hotkeys’. I do not know or understandwhy this works, but it is working fine for me. This, for me, has worked far better than the downloaded ‘fix’ from Microsoft. Also, I have found that ATX power supplies are more prone to this shutdown bug, because of the quick auto-off feature. The new fix from MS, should have the following file attributes: 10/19/99 06:40P 04.10.00.2223 549,600 User.exe Windows 98 Second Edition.

What an amazing variety of answers. Here’s an easy one to try first. Go to Start, Settings, Control panel, System, Performance, File System, CD-ROM… take the slider all the way to the left (not needed unless you access large files from your CD regularly). See if you don’t get a quicker, cleaner shutdown.

Just ran into that Problem today. A person came in and could not shut down his computer would lock up as soon as the icons would leave the sceen. I could here the darn thing come to a abrupt stop… smile. I checked all the settings they all looked great so did some research realy quick of some of the components that he had in his computer. Low and behold it was a glitch in his video driver that he had. turns out that it wasn’t uplated after he installed win98 wasn’t a win prob was a video driver prob. Most the time that’s your best bet. Check message boards and component reveiws to make sure that someone has not found the same glitch you are having. And always make sure you have the very latest drivers.
