Windows 98 Installation VMM32.VXD Error

By cassie ·
A friend has a Compaq Presario 2286 which was very clogged with proprietary preloaded software and was taking 5 minutes to boot. I reformatted the hard drive and tried to load a clean OEM version of Win98. After the hardware detection phase of the intall, the pc rebooted but could not continue because of the following error message: "VMM32.VXD Missing/Unable to load." I could get the pc to boot into safe-mode and verified that the file was intalled on the hard drive. I tried to load windows 3 times before I finally gave up. I've tried disabled the caching in the bios (cpu, video)as well as the virus detection. I also removed the modem, and disabled the onboard sound. The only component left was the onboard video which uses shared memory. Ican successfully reload windows using the Compaq restore CD but this also intalls all of the other "crap" along with it which is what I wanted to avoid. Anyone know why this pc doesn't like the OEM Win98?

Most Compaq systems require a CMOS setup disk which may be downloaded from http://www.compaq.com this disk writes a sector of 2meg to the mbr of your hard drive if you have used FDISK and reformated the drive then you need to start over with the SoftPAQ CMOS Setup disk for your unit.
If this is not the cause of your problem try this Copy the Win98 CABS folder on the Win98 CD to A dir on C:MD Win98
then:
\Copy Win98\*.* C:\Win98
cd C:\Win98
c:\Win98\Setup
With out the CDROM Compaq DriverYour Files May Not Transfer correctly.
Drivers Are Available from the Compaq Site and Links To The Drivers are at http://www.windrivers.com

This is a problem with Compaq and a lot of other proprietary systems. They modify the code just enough so that only their restore cd will work. I had an Aptiva a few weeks ago that wouldn't take 98se or NT. It's an adequate system thats stuck in 95 forever.

Best, Glenn

The VMM32.VXD error is fairly common, particularly where a scanner has been installed. You can "fix" the problem by deleting this file and reinstalling Windows. You can do this from the CD by first renaming win.com to something like win.old. This fools the win installation program into believeing you do not have an operating system already installed.Should the reinstallation fail for any reason, you can name win.old win.com and not lose anything. This fix has worked for me time and time again, like every time I have to install the scanner on a new system.
