NT doesnt recognize new drive letters and reformats same drive. No problem. NT installs files, then instructs you to reboot and installation will continue. Problem is installation doesn’t. When I reboot to continue I get can’t find OS message . Help anyone?400

Sounds like you drive is not partitioned properly. Make sure you set your primary partition (bootable).

Remove your NT partition. get a partition manager like Ranish, remove NT partition, repartition your drive and make the master boot record a boot manager. then reiinstall NT.

One suggestion. Install nt first and then 98. You may have to install 98 as fat16. Nt has to be the primary and not the second os. Nt has the boot loader that will allow for multiple os’s.

Like the previous answer, you will need to create a primary boot partition in FAT16. NT can’t read FAT32 which is what WIN98 will try to create when you run FDISK. If you use WIN2000, it can see a FAT32 partition.

      Hi!

As stated above you cannot use FAT32 since NT dosen’t understand FAT32.

The NT boot partition should be 2Gb or less in order to work properly.

The NT boot partition also has to reside below cylinder 1024 of your primary HD or it won’t be bootable, old BIOS restriction that also is true for all other OSes.

The boot partition should be formatted on WIN98 Partition and install NT on a fat partition if you are not concerned with the security, after NT installs you will have to reinstall WIN98 last, ntfs will not recogonize fat partitions. You can get more info on dual booting from the Microsoft web site http://www.microsoft.com/manuals/dual booting.htm also you can use fdisk to set up your dual boot process, follow the onscreen instructions

I had this same problem installing Linux on an NT machine, making it dual-boot. The problem was that there was no partition set active. This is easy, just go into FDISK and set the active partition as the one you will boot next. Is the computer dual-boot with NT and 98 or just 98?

First, wipe the drive. Then, during the NT install, blow away ALL partitions and create a single one just for NT; install there. Then, create your other partitions using Disk Administrator in NT (leasve as FAT if you want dual-boot).

If you want dual-boot, install Win98 last, onto one of the secondary partitions. It will show up as an option when booting.

Create a 25MB FAT16 partition as your active Primary Partition. Then create an extended partition and install Win98 on a logical drive within the extended partition (this can be FAT32). Then install NT (on FAT if you are not worried about security/extra stability, or NTFS if needed). When you start the PC you will be prompted to start either OS.

it happnned bcoz NT en’t recognise the fat32 when it restart NT is searching for boot loader.
You do one thing try to use FDISK and make one large partioned of your HDD and format it.
Now install the NT than it will ask for you to choose the partioned than delete this large partioned and again make it by the NT installer menu. Here you can able to make the partioned as you want. After making the sucessful partioned, NT will ask you to format the disk, here you choose the FAT only ,
If you choose the NTFS than you can’t able to access other partionned at the time of NT running to your system.

than continue it , I hope everything will be ok.

      with best of luck.

To do this clean and do it right…. Low level format your hard drive to make sure that all data is gone. Then run fdisk and choose NOT to enable large disk support, create a 2 gig primary partition and do whatever you want with the rest of the space (FAT32 or some 2 gig FAT16 partitions) Install windows 98 and do your driver load. Then while in 98 pop in your NT disk, it should autorun and you can follow through the install, then everything should work fine NT will recognize that 98 is thereand it should be happy with it.

      Do this the EASY WAY.

First boot with a Boot disk. Run FDISK. When ask about large disk support, say Y. Get rid of all partitions. Make a Primary partition of 30 megs (C:). Make it active. This will be the boot partition for both. It will format FAT.
Second, make an Extended partition for the rest of your disk space. Use all available space. Then make a Logical partition of the size you want for Win98. DO NOT make another partition yet. Exit out of FDISK. This will format FAT32. Reboot withthe boot disk. Run FDISK. When ask about large disk support. Say NO! Then proceed to make another Logical partition for NT. This will format FAT.
Then install Win98 on the FAT 32 partition. Install Win NT on the FAT. They will both get their booting orders from the C: drive.
You can, at a later time, convert the NT partition to NTFS, if you like.

If you have a combination of IDE & SCSI drives, you will have a problem trying to load NT on the SCSI drives becasue NT will first look to the IDE drives. Check your active partion with Fdisk and that when the system reboots it is looking at the correct partion.
