MS t/s was unable to fix this. After opening Windows Explorer, right clicking on any file, directory, drive, etc.,… causes a terminal error, Windows Explorer has stopped responding. Minimal startup options makes no change. The ONLY time it does not have this behavior is in SAFE mode. I have been through the MS t/s drill, and done the trouble shooting myself to no avail.

It’s very usual to me that… and if you can change your DIMM you will see that is only that, and windows will start correctly again.
It’s common that a Mem DIMM fails… and if you have a memory test like a MEMTEST from Linux… will be more easy.Beacuse, you can check any block sector from the chip.
This program come inside linux… but you can move to a floppy disk too.

I’ve had this problem before, and the only way I could fix it was to reinstall Windows. I did this without reformatting the drive, and the applications etc were still there, so it wasn’t too bad, but I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful!

      Hi

This may sound obvious but have you run software and hardware diagnostics to make sure the system is functioning properly. Did the error start after installing or uninstalling a program or system update. You say that the only time you do not get the error is when you access the OS in Safe mode, so it could be a driver problem. However, you say you have gone through the troubleshooting process, creating the extra hardware profile and eliminating the drivers one by one, have you also tried to disable the .386 files as well, by putting a ; in front of each line that lists a file with a .386 extension in the [386enh] section in system.ini? Have you also eliminated both the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Are there any utilities, such as batch files, or others running before the system starts up completely, have you examined bootlog.txt in c:\? to determine that all elements of windows are loading as they should? Have you checked for a virus?

I am already at this point. Windows explorer stops responding when setting up shares; shares can be set up in Net Watcher though.

      Hi

Have you got the latest version of internet explorer installed, plus all the enhancements? I know that this updates the desktop, but it also (I am sure), updates explorer itself. Apparently, Explorer and I.E. are virtually the same program. To do this you can either go the Windows Update Site, or many Computing magazines offer it as a freebie. You will need to have Windows 98 installed to update to I.E. v.6. Maybe your copy of explorer is defunct – have you tried to extract it from thecab files, and replace your existing copy?

      Hope this helps

I think that you may be successful in correcting the problem if you simply install Windows over itself. It will replace damaged or missing system files that would cause such a result.

I know this sounds like a level 1 tech answer but looking at the amount of time you have invested in solving this problem, it is probably better back up all the info and reformat the drive and reinstall everything. there are some problems with windows that cannot be solved (bring this up with Gates). the amount of time to do a good backup and reinstall the software is considerably less than the time spent solving the problem.

granted this will solve the problem. The issue was to find an answer from a specific error code written by s/w eng’s. As you said, some of what MS sells can’t be fixed when it broken.
I don’t feel anyone solved the problem, so no one should have the points. Thanks Mr Gates for a 80.00 product that costs 500.00 to fix.
