    Windows hangs on shutdown

    Locked

    by cdb ·

Running 38 Compaq Deskpro 2000’s with Win95 osr2 and Explorer 4 everything is fine. I loaded Explorer 5 and the machines hang at the Windows “cloud” shut down screen. I loaded Explorer 5.5 same thing. I’ve disabled all power saving controls, Windowsand bios. There is no bios update from Compaq. Is there a patch I don’t know about? Can I remove the Explorer compleatly? Thanks for the help Chris

Go to the Microsoft knowledgebase to see articles on 98 shutdown problems
Another option would be to download the latest service release to see if that will help.
Remove IE5, you can restore to previous version by going thru the Add/Remove programs and clicking on IE,then click remove button ,choose the option to restore to previous version.
You can also check to see if the screen saver may be causing a problem

Have spent 6 hours on the Microsoft site and my sources generaly. Of couse I can remove programs through the Add/Remove I am thinking that that will not remove the critical system file causing the problem. As these are business computers no screen savers are allowed.

It’s not an issue with your computer, it’s Windows that does the hang. I do think that Microsoft has a patch for this problem. Look around their site and see what you can find. You might be able to get rid of IE completely on a Win95 machine, as IE isn’t as integrated on ’95 as it is in ’98 and ME. If when you upgraded you had the installation program backup your old configuration, you can run it again to get rid of IE 5, and go back to 4. Personally I dont see much in 5 and 5.5 that I cant live without so version 4 is probably good enough for most users. Hope this helps you out.

It is a problem with hardware as well. On the same network there are 5 Compaq EN-400’s. These are a later machine. Running the same software, they all shutdown properly. That is why I thought it had to do with the power settings. There was no backup option on the install for system files. I agree with you there is nothing in 5 or 5.5 I want however the customer wanted. If I can sove this I’ll recommend Opera.

I had same problem when I upgraded to IE5. I don’t know why, but the fix for me was to disable the check floppy at shutdown option in my ANTI-VIRUS software. I know, makes no sense because it worked fine before IE5, but it worked for me.

I would Suggest to install a stand alone version of Ie 5.0 an then upgrade to Ie 5.5. In other words go to microsoft.com download section find Ie 5.0 download it (aprox. 465kb). Then un-install Ie completely, once this is done after restarting computer, scan-disk and defrag hard drive. Run Ie 5.0 this will take you to their instalation site and take it from there, when you are done, go back to Microsft.com downloads and get the Ie 5.5 upgrade, but instead of downloading, choose “run from site” option instead of save to disk, follow the promts and install it. If all this does not work consider upgrading to WIN98.

Thanks for the input however I have all ready tried this. In this networked situation upgrading the OS is not an option.(I’d rather undo the mess Microsoft handed me with their “new” browser)This is definatly a case of hardware, OS, and browser, maybe as well the A-virus working together to give me a headache.

One of many reasons to update from win98. This problem has nothing to do with your computer it happens on most win98 machines. No known fix that I know that works for sure, However try what the others answerd because I have seen in many cases that one or the other helped but it might not help.

We are running 42 Dell GX1’s here. Most do not have IE5 on them. It’s been removed. They are all running WIN98 2nd Ed. One day a system will shutdown just fine, the next it hangs up on shutdown. I’ve followed the Microsoft instructions for alleviating this problem and it just doesn’t work. Unfortunately, my users have learned to live with it.

I agree with the problem solution concerning the anti-virus software. Disable the scan floppies on shutdown! That should take care of the problem.

I’ve come across this problem on both Win95 & Win98 systems. Try deleting/replacing the logo.sys files in the windows directory (Hidden) and the exit windows .WAV file. Sometimes these get corrupt and hose the system on shutdown.
