    Windows ME and Dos

Does Windows ME support sound for Dos-based programs? I have a Dos game that worked fine on my computer that was running Windows 98, but has a sound error when running on my Windows ME machine. The error reads, check port, IRQ and DMA settings. My sound works fine in all Windows applications. Do you have any ideas on how I can correct this problem?

I don’t know the exact setting for your sound card but you might give this a try. From the Start->Run, type in msconfig and choose the Environment Tab in the System Configuration Utility dialog box. Click on New.. and type in SET BLASTER in the Varible Name, A220 I5 D1 in the Variable Value then click O.K. Make sure that the box next to your new variable is checked and restart your system.
Hope this helps you out, Jerry

I did everything as you instructed, but the same error pops up. In fact, there was already a BLASTER variable set, and it had Variable Value A220 I5 D1 T1. Thank you for trying to help though. If you have any other ideas PLEASE let me know.

Windows Me is based on the old Windows line running over DOS and supports DOS drivers in most situations. You should check your configuration files to see that the sound card settings have not been commented out. Additionally you may want to checkthe properties for the driver in Windows. Some legacy cards will supply special options for configuring the card to work for DOS applications. If those 2 options fail you could reinstall the DOS versions of the drivers to make sure that everythingis set up okay. What this an upgrade or a new install?

I take it that the Win Me comtpuer is another computer and not an update of the win 98? if that is so then you may have a Windows only sound card, and you will not be able to play sound though dos programs, my suggestion is to download some other dos sound making programs and see if they work, and also check your sound card maker to see if it really is a windows only sound card.
