Windows NT Workstation logon to NT only

By louie ·
I have this problem. There are a number of workstations that when logging on they only get two lines. Not the regular three. They only get username and password when they should have username, password and domain. They are missing the domain and I do not know why. They do a reboot and the domain line shows up again most of the time. I have removed these workstations from the domain and readded them and the same workstations are still doing this. These workstations are running Windows NT 4.0 SP5. We are running a token ring segment and ethernet segment for our network. Our servers mainly reside on the ethernet side and I think that these workstations reside on token ring side. Just giving all the information that I can and any help would begreat.

These kind of software problems make me think that SP5 is the problem. I'd install SP6.0a.

It seems the workstations believe they exists on a peer to peer network. This leaves me to believe there is a hardware problem (Nic, cable connectivity problem, bad hub etc.) I assume you are using TCP/IP, perhaps try removing and re-installing TCP/IP.

As mentioned above, the workstations seem to think they are in a workgroup rather than domain. To change this click the change button on the Identification tab of the network properties window. In "Memeber of" Make sure "domain" is selected and theDomain name is correct. If that doesn't resolve the problem try removing then reinstalling the networking for the workstations, then re-adding the systems to the domain. If that doesn't work then as above check your hardware. Can the workstations ping the DNS? If so hardware is fine. Verify framerate if using IPX/SPX.

If you have a DNS server, check in Network Neighbor - Properties- Protocols - TCP/IP - WINS address and verify the Enable DNS is selected. We have had occasional problems with token ring PCs not being able to see ethernet servers. This resolved it.

This worked well. Found that this was not checked and after it was checked, the server was bounced and it appeared that no one is having this problem any more.
