Windows protection error

Power supper is suddenly down.
After that, my computer cannot boot up normally.
After showing the windows screen, the computer is stopped. No harddisk is on.

Then error appears
“Windows protection error. You have to restart the computer”

Ofcourse, now everytime the computer has this problem and I can no longer use it again.

I cannot boot it into safe mode.

My system: win 98 Chinese; not in a network used in my home. 64 M RAM.

Microsoft’s solution is not helpful.
I have tried ALL the possibilities they suggest; but USELESS.

I finally go my own way and fix it all by myself.
Yes, I have lost more and more faith in their solutions.
My previous experience with their suggestions has proved that most of the time, their solutions are useless.

The following is from Microsoft article Q187212 titled, “Windows Protection Error” After Upgrading to Windows 98″.

This behavior can occur when all of the following conditions exist:

You have installed Windows 98 on a Toshiba Libretto 50CT, 70CT or 100CT computer.

Your computer has a standard port replicator.

You have a serial mouse attached to the standard port replicator.

The Windows 98 serial port driver (Serial.vxd) conflicts with Toshiba’s power management driver (Pwrsave.vxd).

To resolve this issue, obtain the latest power management drivers for your computer from Toshiba’s Web site. These drivers are available as L50pwsave.exe, L70pwsave.exe, and L100pwsave.exe. To work around this issue, follow these steps:
Restart your computer, press and hold CTRL until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then select Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.

Use any text editor (such as Edit.com) to open the System.ini file in the Windows folder.

Locate the “device=pwrsave.vxd” line in the [386enh] section of the System.ini file, and then disable it by placing a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.

Save and then close the System.ini file.

Restart your computer.

I just realized that you said that you can’t boot into safe mode. So I might suggest booting up on a booy disk and edit the system.ini file from the DOS command prompt.

Tim, thank you for your help. I am looking on the article; but Microsoft’s solution is very complicated. I will test it and will rate your answer later.

Maxwell, my problem does not occur in fresh installation. I have used the win 98 for a long time. But this occurs after power supper is donw.

Hi PhilTheGreat,

I’ve done some more looking around on your problem and found several references to it. All of them have on thing in common – a corrupted driver. That must’ve happened when you lost power to your PC.

Why cant you boot to safe mode? If it says the same thing, then I would assume its one of the fundamental drivers that has been corrupted. (Safe mode is without all “unnecessary” drivers)

If thats the case you may have to re-install fresh.

I did find this one reference though. Hope it doesn’t apply to you…

Occurs just before Windows loads. DOS screen that says “Windows Protection Error. You must restart your computer.

1. Restart the computer and boot into safe mode.
2. Go to start, then run, and type in “sysedit” then press enter.
3. Edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and remove any line that references SMARTDRV.EXE
4. If there are no references to SMARTDRV.EXE in either file then you can find the file and rename it.
5. If after renaming and removing any reference in the startup files the problem still comes up you probably have either bad RAM, or RAM that is not compatible with your motherboard.”

Please note that
I cannot boot into SAFE MODE.
So all the proposals are not working.
Finally, I have to re-install the windows.
And delete the input device driver.
