Windows Protection Error

By tmunkres ·
While Initializing Device IOS:
Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.

OK, what's up?

I've looked up the error. 3Com claims it is due to a memory allocation conflict. They suggest an updated driver, but their drivers only will update if you get INTO Windows. I can't.

Windows 95, 3c905c, Award BIOS 4.51, 500Mhz CPU, etc.

I've deltree'd the Windows dir and even gone so far as to re-format the HD. Removed the NIC. Reset BIOS to reset the PNP settings. Re-Installed repeatedly. All to no avail.

Suggestions??

Windows Protection Error

I searched their database and found three remedy documents.

1. suggests renaming Smartdrv.exe - someone else had suggested that and it didn't work.
2. suggests the AMDk6Upd.exe, but must be executed in Safe Mode which I cannot attain. It will not execute in DOS mode.
3. suggests making Win95 upgraded to a Service Patch 2.5 - which we run, except I cannot get windows to open (even in safe mode) to update.

Anyone got a sledge hammer???

Hi Traci,

I see that you have reject all other answers.

May I suggest that you upgrade to Windows 98SE. You can get a upgrade verison, or a full verison. I recommend the full verison, because it is a cleaner setup. Windows 95 is still full of bugs, and Microsoft is not supporting it anymore.

I also suggest that you update to the latest BIOS, and all other drivers especially the Video Card driver.

Good luck!

My employer uses W95 with Y2K patches. We are migrating all of our desktop PCs to NT in the near future. So, 98 or 2000 is not an option.

BIOS update is in the works, once I get everything else figured out - and the drivers are the latest already.

I thank you for your input, tho.

Best regards,
Traci in Sunny South Texas
