Windows XP repair without original disc

By etcw-dw ·
A few days ago my computer refused to boot after a power outage and I got blue screened(Non mountable disc error). My version of Windows is XP Pro. I want to do a Winows repair but can't find the original disc. I tried to boot up from a friends XP Pro CD but didn't get offered the option of a repair only a full installation. Is a repair impossible without the original disc? If I do need to do a reinstallation with a new CD is there anyway I can save my old files i.e. photos etc. I have stored on my hard drive? FYI Right now I only have a single partition.

XP Pro recovery disk

One thing you have to remember that the recovery disk has to be from the same company of the PC. While some are interchangable, it wont give you the repair option. Another option is to install another HDD, reinstall the OS then copy all the files you want from the old drive. This is a fair amount of work, but also a learning experiance.
