WinFax 10.03 on Windows Server 2003

    Locked

    by susu ·

I have a client with a Windows Server 2003 server. I am trying to get WinFax to run on it. Faxing from the WinFax app works fine, but I can’t fax using the fax printer drivers. I had to change a group policy to allow kernel-mode drivers to even get the fax printer to install. When I try to use the photo-quality fax printer, I get a blue-screen. When I try to use the regular one it starts to work, but eventually locks up. The version on the WinFax disc says 10.0, but the About dialog says 10.03. Symantec KB only lists 10.0 and 10.02. What gives with that?

Sounds like when they coded it for the appliance they made some changes. Have you checked on Digital SMB signing isn’t the issue? A number of older devices don’t like this authentication method.

You can follow the directions here to disable this:

“When they(Symantec? Microsoft?) coded it(Windows Server 2003? WinFax? The fax-printer driver?) for the appliance(the server is the only piece of hardware here.)”?
Could you be a little more specific?

I may be way off here, but I had a simliar issue on a 2k server, and it ended up being that the Winfax program changed the mfc42.dll file version to use it version, and the server didn’t like this.

I tried for days to work around it and the only way I could get it to stop was to replace the original dll file and not use Winfax on that machine..

This was a 1-1/2 years ago, maybe Symantec has added something to prevent this, but it would seem to be to be the same issue.

When it blue screens, do you get any indication of the module or the codes it failing on. Also check the eventlog for any clues..

      Good Luck

      Ciracao asked the following:
Q: What os are the clients running, are they fully pathed. ?
A: No clients. I am trying to fax from the server itself.
Q: From what program are you faxing, if office , do they have the latests service packs ?
A: Just trying to “print” a test page to the WinFax printer driver.
Q: Does it work when a administror tries to sent a fax ?
A: The admin is the only one I have tried. As stated above, faxing through the WinFax message manager works, but I can’t send a print job to the WinFax printer driver and have it fax.
Q: Which printer or you using, is the latest driver installed ?
A: There is no actual printer involved. The WinFax Printer Driver is a piece of software that accepts print jobs from any program and then sends them as a fax. It is installed as a printer in Windows however.
Q: What is the exact error message of the BSOD ?
A: I wrote it down, but I dont have it with me. I only got the BSOD once.

More info on what happens when I try to fax using the WinFax printer driver:
      1. Open printers and faxes.
      2. open properties for WinFax printer.
      3. click “print test page”.
      4. cover-page editor appears.
      5. fill in info (name, fax#, etc) and click “send” button
      6. a different(?) coverpage editor appears (more like a print-preview).
      7. click the “send” button on this screen.
      8. get a message that says that winfax is still printing and any more pages that are printed will be added to this fax (I’m sorry I didn’t write down the exact message. In retrospect, that would have been smart.)
      9. get put back into the original cover page editor.
      10. click send again and winfax locks up. I have to restart the service and end several tasks.

lets go back a couple of steps then.
exactly which winfax are you using !!

maybe you are doing something not supported ?

      according to this link http://tinyurl.com/4xcar
page 20 w2k server is not listed in the requirements, only w2k pro.
and page 19 is mentioning a pdf file on the cd (which unfortunately I don’t have to review)
      for network usage.

btw you can contact me via my hotmail account

      just info:
page 22 is mentioning a utility for permissions for when you are at that level to implement it to the users.
