This is plain and simple unfair I go away on a job for a few days and don’t have access to the Net and what do I find when I come back I’ve been moved to number 1 from 2 in the Top 100 List. 🙁
There is something fundamentally wrong with the TR site ratings when this happens and you get 69 without trying. ;\
I’ve been asking to have my site rating hard coded to position 666 of the Top 100 since this feature became available on TR but the Powers That Be At TR will not play nice. :_|
Anyway when you eventually move off 69 I hope you can firstly get it out and then straighten up so that you’ll be able to move around once again and more importantly rejoin us all at TR. :p

But doesn’t the toilet swirl in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere than it does up here in the normal half of the earth? Hell, I’v watched toilets flush several times a day for my whole life, and I couldn’t tell you if they swirl clockwise or counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere. I think I’ll walk over to the restroom and try an experiment right now.

Damn… we have those high-powered turbo-charged toilets that suck the water from the bowl instead of letting it drain out. Push down the handle and water wushes down the hole in mere nanoseconds. No swirling. I’ll have to try this again at home this evening.

The force that causes hurricanes to spiral is coriolis force and hurricanes in the southern hemisphere swirl the opposite way to the North. Yes, the equator is travelling faster than higher latitudes and that generates the force, BUT, the difference in velocity across the width of your toilet pan is minute! The force is easily outweighed by imperfections in the bog’s construction, different flush placement, air currents, differentials in temperature, direction of original pee, etc, etc.
The water will spin any way it wants.

MARK Neil is quite correct on this one
by hal 9000 · about 17 years, 11 months ago
In reply to Appearances are deceiving
But you need massive sizes of water to properly observe the phenom. So instead of looking constantly into the Toilet try looking at the way that the underwater currents travel or the way that the winds travel in extreme weather conditions. B-)
The one that I really liked was in the Sydney Hobart race a few years ago when every thing went to Hell in a Hand-basket one of the Yank skippers was watching a real time weather cast and saw the formation of a very localised weather pattern which he called a Hurricane when actually it was a Cyclone, but being from the wrong side of the tracks he didn’t quite understand this. :^0
Unfortunately he didn’t bother to report this to the Race Officials and just let them continue with their Heavy Weather Forecasts which wasn’t such a good thing. If memory serves me correctly six yachts where lost and 16 people disappeared presumed drowned with waves in excess of 100 feet hitting the fleet. Boy am I glad that I wasn’t sailing in that race. 😉
But the ones that really got my respect where the Air Sea Rescue Helo crews who had to fly out in those atrocious weather conditions and pluck some survivors to safety. Their ability to hover a certain height above the water was severely compromised by the fact that when hovering at 100 feet above the troughs they where below the height of the incoming waves with no visibility. Really it was a miracle that none of the Helos got washed away as well Though I’m reliablly informed that several of the rescue party hanging out the door got their feet wet on more than one occasion. 🙂
It must have been a wild ride and I can not imagine how many people would have paid for that Adrenalin rush. To give you an idea of just how bad things went the Winston Churchill a yacht that had competed in every Sydney Hobart race since its inception only took 6 minutes to sink after it sprang a few boards in the hull as it couldn’t handle the conditions. All the other yachts that where lost where the ones that tried to run for cover after the bad weather hit so instead of hitting the seas head on they where broaching the waves and had very little chance of surviving.

Water can flow uphill if subjected to hydraulic damming. It can also flow uphil when forming a Tidal Bore (we have a famous one on the River severn).
The Amazon River has a bore up to 12 feet high running at up to 15 miles per hour called the pororoca.

I bet you didn’t know this about that Niamiha river
by m_a_r_k · about 17 years, 11 months ago
In reply to Appearances are deceiving
The first mention of the Niamiha River in historical chronicles is connected with a disastrous battle, which took place in Minsk in 1067, when the forces of the prince of Kyivan Rus’ defeated the forces of Polatsk princedom. The mediaeval epic The Lay of Ihor’s Campaign refers to the “bloody river banks of Niamiha.”
Another interesting tidbit for you to chew on. The river is now almost completely contained within an underground pipe. This was done because it got in the way of the growth of Minsk. Because it’s underground, not many people (other you and me) know of its existence.

The Cockneys – amongst whom I live but with whom I do NOT identify – eat jellied eels with pepper and vinegar. GAH!
However, in the defence of eels, I would point out that they are just fish. A strangely shaped fish, admittedly, but just a fish.
Freshwater eels skinned and fried with a little garlic are delicious and, when smoked, they are one of the great delicacies of the world. They are a very oily fish and so, like salmon, take to smoking very well.
I wonder how you’d get on with a conger eel in a small boat. The biggest that I’ve caught is around 50lb.

Eels woul dbe odd, I don’t mind pickled herrings with Vodka Lime (tart lime).
I prefer Guinness with……….pretty much anything including air I guess.
I think I made that 3-d CUBS buttton for Faradhi a long time ago. I did a bunch for different peers when they first started avatars, I’m not sure if I did that one or not.
