Meeting and names

by Mark W. Kaelin Editor In reply to World of Warcraft TR Meet ...

First, I think we can safely say any member on TechRepublic is welcome. And just about anyone beyond TechRepublic too.

Second, once you know someone's name you can add them to your friends list - that way you'll know who is on. We'll have to make it to a capitol city to form the guild. A guild gets its own chat channel - where we can talk amongst ourselves.

It's 10 characters per server - I encourage experimenting - I like the Warlock so that is what I'll be. My brother is a Hunter - his best character choice.

Look for:

Elkwinkarma - Undead Warlock
Dozark - Orc Hunter

See you in game.

Got live last night

by jdclyde In reply to Meeting and names

razzor, a big furry brute of a fighter!

I just ran around and bumped into a lot of walls.

Friend list, that goes by ACCOUNT name, not character name, right?

You guessed it, my account name is jdclyde.

From reading up on exp distribution, are we all going to start with new characters for this so the high lvl characters don't suck up most of the exp?

Question. Found a shield and it said I couldn't use this yet. I tried right-clicking on the shield to try to see what it is that is required to use, but didn't see anything. How do I determine what the requirements are?

I also have yet to find the dude to sell things too so I can get some gold, and get a second backpack or two. It is full of eggs, feathers and claws. If they are available to loot off bodies, I assume you can use or sell them?

Also, will we be using the "round-robin" loot method?

Friends list and looting

by Bill Detwiler Editor In reply to Got live last night

Your friends list will key off each character's name--as the same account could have multiple characters.

It will take you a while to get even a single gold coin--unless someone sends you one. You'll still be earning silver until your 40s and 50s for missions, however you can easily make more money be selling stuff in a capital city auction house (AH) or to vendors (NPCs who sell stuff). Vendors will always give you much less than you can get at the AH, but not all items, particullarly low-lvl ites, will sell in the AH.

Looting is only an issue in groups. Most looting is set to uncommon--if I remember correctly. Anyone can loot common items on a round robin basis. If a blue item comes up the members of the party must roll for the item. The game randomly generates a number of each character and the item goes to the character with the highest roll (1-100). Once you get into a group the group leader will configure and alert the other group members to the looting rules for that group.

Some answers

by Mark W. Kaelin Editor In reply to Got live last night

Friends is populated by character names - add Elkwinkarma to it and you'll see me next time we are on at the same time.

We are starting with new characters - my brother (Dozark) and I have started our characters a little early so we can show you guys around - you'll level up in no time and then we can group.

I assume since you are fury, you are a Tauren. Look for the general goods vendor - you can sell to her. She's in the initial camp.

More bags are diserable, but not easy to come by until later. Elkwinkarma is a tailor - I hope to be making bags for the guild soon.

Item Attributes

Left-clicking and item will usually display the item's attributes--including the level requirement.

Looting Low down

by jmgarvin In reply to Got live last night

Ok, so you typically work round robin. Money is always shared equally (the game rounds up usually). If there is only 1 copper, then EVERYONE gets 1 copper.

For items that are green, blue, purple, or orange, you have to roll.

There is need: I need this item and I could use it.
There is greed: I might need this item, but someone else might need it
There is pass: I don't need or want this item

It is considered good form to pass on all bind on equip items. Then roll for the BoP item after everyone has passed. The reasoning behind this is that people can (and sometimes do) abuse the need/greed system...

The friends list goes by character name...

The shield, on mouse over, should have a list of stats on it, including level. Some character classes can't use shields and some races have to train in shields. You'll have to find a major city (Ogrimmar or the Undercity) and find a weapons trainer.

I don't know much about how the Horde world works but I assume it's pretty much the same as Alliance in early-game terms.

When you mouse over an item it'll show the characteristics of taht item. Anything that will keep you from using that item will show up in red (i.e. Requires level 10).

Loot everything possible if you're alone. Items with names in gray are for selling at a vendor (eggs, claws, etc.) You probably won't be able to use them. Keep only items you can use, sell everything else. Keep any item with its name in green -- if you can't use it, sell it on the auction house. I usually take items and search them on the auction house and undercut the price 5%-10% for buyout. By the time you come across blue items you'll probably have a feel for what's going on.

You can only have 1 backpack, the rest of the slots are for bags. You'll want to have an account at a bank too, you'll be surprised how fast the bags fill up.

Being a fighter, you'll want probably spirit and stamina items. Attack power is always good. (again this probably won't be a point until you're level 10 or so.)

QUEST QUEST QUEST. Do every quest you come across until you're level 25 at least. No matter how stupid they are, they give XP. After level 10 you get Talent Points for each level. I've only played rogue so I don't know fighter points but align them with however you want your character to be played in the long run. You can "respec" or change them around, but it costs a lot of money.

I'd join up but I'm busy trying to get my character on Nath server higher lvl.

New vs. Experienced

by FirstPeter In reply to Got live last night

I'm on board - if someone wants to look out for "Alterthorn" that's me - a 32 Tauren Shaman. Love to join - just have a horrible memory that precludes me remembering to check TR for a list of folks before I start playing. :)

It would probably help to have a couple of high levels in the guild to help with some of the sticky spots; I know my Alliance guild (Suicidal Warriors) has that, so if you're particularly stumped by a quest you can have a 60 jump in and help or guide you through ugly spots to get to new flight paths (without dying 14 times). Not crutches for everything, but useful from time to time.
