XP freezes after install

After a fresh install of Win XP Pro SP2. My taskbar freezes. I have to CTL+ALT+DEL to unsuspend. Runs fine in safe mode.

it may be a problem with a driver. You might check the driver manager.

Problem solved; as it turns out, USB mouse was the culprit. PS/2 mouse solved the problem. Very peculiar; never had this happen before. Tried 2 different AMD m’boards with Nvidia & ATI chipsets using AMD64 X2 4600+ cpu.

I suspect the problem was not the USB mouse so much as it was an issue with the default XP USB driver.

Since your hardware is newer than the XP driver set, there are going to be features and even registry settings that will not be properly implemented with the default XP drivers.

I suspect if you install the full set of drivers for the motherboard, then connect up your USB mouse, that everything will function properly.

There is a chance that you may need some XP updates to fix all of the USB related issues.

Thanks Chas, even after installing all the drivers and completing all the updates, same result.
