I have problems with XP and sound. What happend is when i’m in games particurly the video clips the sound cuts in and out. I have tried everything i can think of and still it has this problem!! I have an AMD 1800+ CPU with a gigabyte 7DX+ motherboard, geforce 4 video card. I have disabled the onboard video and put in a Vibra 128 pci sound card but it does the same thing!! I’ve got all the updated drivers, flashed the bios.
Any idea’s would be appreciated before i see how well this computercan fly!!

There are a few things that could clear this up some. First thing is did you upgrade to XP from windows9x or me? Or was it a clean install? The second things would be does it act the same with all games, and only on the video scenes? Also are you able to run the Direct X Diagnostic’s on this system? DXDIAG.EXE from the Run line. I would try to pinpoint the source of the problem, maybe a certain type of video file, maybe a directx problem. If you upgraded to XP this is probably the cause. Or maybe a game installation has overwritten your XP DirectX version 8.1 with an older version. Run DXDIAG.EXE and see. Let me know.

Clean install of XP, yes it does this fault with all the games i’ve used, it played mp3’s fine, just the movie and speech parts it mucks up. I’ve run dxdiag and it works fine through there. If also re-installed direct X a few times!! Thanks

It can be a bios setting that causes this problem. You can assign an irq to your video card; if this setting is turned off you can get sound problems. Check if this settings off and turn it on. See http://tinyurl.com/1cv1 for more info.

Check ifDMA setting of your harddisk is turned on. Video clips with sound generates big data stream and slow throughput can also cause video and sound problems.

If your hardrive is connected to another device (cdrom, zip drive) on the same cable that can cause it.

Try patching the game itself. Check message boards or go to support on the games website.

There are a couple of possibilities. One may be your sound sampling rate may be set too high (adjust with multimedia in control panel). Another could be the GeForce 4 card may have to reduce the hardware acceleration (I had to do that for a video capture operation). Set the acceleration to the first indicator and turn off the “Enable Write Combining” box.

To set the hardware acceleration open the display properties, select Settings & Advanced, then Troubleshoot You’ll see the hardware acceleration pointer and the Enable Write Combining box. Make your adjustments. You can also use the troubleshooter (help) but that doesn’t always solve the problem. In Control Panel select Sounds & Audio Devices and on the volume tab, select Advanced then select Performance. Check settings there.

      Check Your DxDiag Settings
      Install Direct X 8.1
Get All The Lastest Windows XP Updates Mainly The Driver’s

Are You Sound Cards Driver’s Unsigned They may cut in and out prior to that

      roll back driver’s

get the lastest sound card driver’s i cant tell u where from because you havent tould me what sound card you have prior to whether its extended or on board

clean install boot via the Cd from the BIOS Clean install instead of upgrade

      install SP1 For winxp

although try changing sound cards which you said you did do it this way change them via extended and via onboard you cant change onboard i know but what i mean is set it to run sound via onboard see if that works

are the JP on the sound card set correctly
are theyset to one cdrom only have they been plugged into the correct cdrom outlet
      or correct onboard outlet

Test to see if when the sound cuts out its just for the stuff on CD’s Via through the CDROm nor through the HDD if so you need a speaker or CDROM drive update

This happens to my friend who has the same sound card with Carmon Speakers

the lastest pci update patch fixes it all

Flashing the bios if that didnt help then

i would get winxp updates prior windowsupdates.microsoft.com
i work for -=DaRk_sHaDoW=- Technology Corp Of Australia and as a computer technition i have assumed that the JP’s are set wrong
the updates are not installed or not installed correct
the driver’s are not digitally signed
the motherboard does not support your sound card
you pci slot has been corrupted or set to the wrong frequency
TRY Enabling DMA mode 33/66/100/ although that only really display

try ajust the program/game settings prior sound

check updates for the games/movies etc…….

Check to see if the sound cuts in and out only when playing via a cdrom

      GOodluck hope this work

my website will be up in about 1month or so with tech support on

      i afce this problem before.
if you are installing xp in the “upgrade” method, then don’t install the sound driver first. only install the sound driver after you installed the winXP !
and one more thing. winXP might tell you that your “sound” device as in hardware doesn’t support winxp. it is because the sound driver don’t have the digital signature if i’m not wrong.

just remember to install the sound driver after install your XP !

I had the same problem on a amd 1700 asus a7v266 and a GF4… go into dxdiag and reduce the acceleration on the sound panel… that simple. play with it untill you get the best results… I had to turn it down only 1 notch to solve my problem.
