Can the iPhone XR and IPhone 11 play YouTube videos in 4K?

By Mcgr993 ·
Hello, please can iPhone users (especially XR and 11) tell me if they can play YouTube videos in 4K? I have read that only oled models were able to do that, but I have seen some people do that in an iPhone XR during the beta state of iOS 14. Now that we are in iOS 15 can the iPhone XR and 11 play YouTube videos on that resolution even if they don’t have an oled display?

The video codec encoded on YouTube 4K depends

by jessicasimpson015 In reply to Can the iPhone XR and IPh ...

It depends. For YouTube videos encoded in AVC codec, it is no problem at all. But since Google is promoting the AOMedia’s new video codec standard AV1 codec, most YouTube videos right new are encoded in AV1 codec, a new codec that is not supported by all Apple devices. So whether it is the new iPhone 13 or the elder iPhone XR, iPhone 11, it cannot play the YouTube video at all.

I come across the AV1 video page here https://bit.ly/3GuVgMd, hope it can help you.
