Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are concepts which are going mainstream in both consumer and business operations. Both have shown incredible potential and versatility across a wide range of applications. AR can be used as an “overlay” concept to link real-world environments to technology such as via identification of individuals, providing GPS data or “trying on” accessories in online shopping scenarios. Possible uses for VR involve education and training, product design, architecture, language translation, and of course films and gaming.

At present, AR has made further inroads than VR, as evidenced by concepts such as Google Glass and Oculus Rift, which provide augmented reality features. While VR may not become as widespread just yet, within a few years it will become more commonplace.

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for the appropriate business usage of virtual and augmented reality. It includes rules for employee vs. company owned devices, accepted practices and limitations.
