Because most of us use Microsoft word or other word processors for writing why does anyone need windows’ built-in word processors WordPad and Notepad?

Notepad and wordpad are very usefull for doing basic things. Most of the time they are used for readme files and for simple scripting in batch or login script files. Since not every one has the same robust office programs these are used for the simple things and is universal as notepad and wordpad is included with all windows installations. Besides when trying to save a .Doc file(MS Word) as a .bat(for batch) it becomes scrambled and not usable as a batch or script file. Im sure the other office apps are the same way.

I suppose it’s kind of like saying “because everyone could have a minivan, why would they drive a car?” (Mini-vans are big, comfortable, hold more stuff, offer lots of options and get you around….if you follow the analogy).

Notepad and Wordpad are great tools for creating text documents and reading/viewing files without adding the complexity of word, it’s headers, etc.

In other words, they are small fast and easy to use. They come with the OS and help doing many little tasks (writing and editing dos files being one of the most common). Don’t forget the old edit command either….it still has its uses….

I’d say (as you suggested) very few people use Wordpad or Notepad as a word processor any more. Still…they have a place and many savvy users will consider them valuable tools.

You need notepad as it is the core program used by Windows to edit system files.

The sysedit command simply opens a special session of Notepad that allows you to edit the core legacy system files.

I use notepad to save small files of text fromwebsites that I download files from.
I name the text file the same as the download, using the .txt extension.
This way, I have a small easy to view file to remind me what I had downloaded.

Since both notepad and Wordpad are small applications, they don’t hog a lot of resources should you need to view or edit a document while you have other tasks running.

I use neither Wordpad or Notepad so really you don’t need them. I use Notetab Pro for everything, best piece of software I’ve ever purchased & has more features/options then the others combined. Infact Notepad no longer resides on my PC’s, the only remaining MS Office program I still use is Outlook & I really don’t know why I still use Outlook since I have 4 other better email clients installed, which aren’t bothered by all the security problems MS products are prone to.

Wordpad and Notepad are mainly used for editing files that you can not access with word. Such files include .ini, .sys and so on that are not true text files but are edited as text files.
