Change font in macOS Messages app

By barleyswaxol36 ·

Back in Mojave I was able to change the default font in the Messages app, I think with a setting in System Preferences > Accessibility.

After upgrading to Big Sur that font change remained, but for some reason it got reset today, right after I had to use Activity Monitor to quit Notifications (because the Notifications pane was stuck open and was beachballing).

Now I'm back to the standard font, which I don't like, and I don't see any way to change the font, either in Messages' preferences or in Big Sur's Accessibility PrefPane.

Am I missing something? Anyone know how I can choose a different font again for macOS Messages?

Remember I vaguely remember we had to change the color to have Messages show us the font options. Google your question to find step-by-steps.

Hopefully someone else will find a step-by-step for you. Try Apple's own forums and remember that the font options in the past didn't show until you changed some option (like color.) It's not obvious to anyone back then and I wonder if Apple changed that to be a system wide change rather then just this app.

in preferences?

I've just checked (on Big Sur).
Open Messages, open its Preferences (Command+,), check the General tab at the bottom. It says Text and shows options. Select Other, wait, now you can select any font and size. Click three dots in the top left corner to see other options like Color.

Maybe only certain versions of Big Sur?

That's how I found out in the first place that you can change the font in Messages, via the preferences directly in the app. But when I showed it to my brother who is on Big Sur 11.1 (I'm 11.0.1), his preferences only give him the option to change the font size using a slider. No drop down menu or anything.

Open Messages app and open “Preferences” from the Messages window. Click the “Messages” tab and then click the pulldown menu next to “My background color”, set it to anything other than “Automatic” to unlock the “Set Font…” button. Now click on “Set Font” and choose the font size you'd like to use for your iMessages.

let's not compare 2 completely different systems, a completely different approach, the nix system and windows should not even be put side by side, different approaches
