Chrome internet shortcuts got cut off

By mtbasus ·
In Chrome, I use the 3 vertical dots on the upper right, then pick More Tools ->Create Shortcut->confirm or change the proposed name of the shortcut and press Create. Worked for ages and hundreds of links.

All of a sudden these indispensable links have become void, i.e. the only open Chrome to the standard Google search page. This is indeed a disaster, and after days seartching the net, I have found no explanation nor any solution.

Right-clicking on a fresh shortcut, I see something linke this on the TAB Shortcut
Target type:
Target Location:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome_proxy.exe" --profile-directory=Default --app-id=lgfpnfjfohddhclcoehedfpiomlnocej
Start in:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application"
Shortcut key:
Normal Window

When I look at a "broken shortcut" there is something MISSING
i.e. (in the above example) :
--profile-directory=Default --app-id=lgfpnfjfohddhclcoehedfpiomlnocej

I have two questions:
1) what could have caused this
2) is there a way to recover the information I have lost?

Do you back up your bookmarks?

If you don't you risk loss. There are many prior discussions about losing shortcuts and more but to avoid loss we must keep a backup copy.

Read for yet another recent discussion about this.

Backup is the only way to prevent loss. All apps can lose information so again you know how to stop the loses.

Re: shortcuts

It's unclear what caused this, and it seems unrecoverable.

The simple prevention is to set new shortcuts to readonly (right click>attributes>general). Then they can't be deleted and they can't be changed.

Making a backup of things you don't want to lose, as suggested by rproffitt is always a good idea. Suppose your hard disk suddenly fails and you have to buy another PC or laptop.
