Storage

Question

Hard drive slowly taking up storage

By TheDankSoviet ·
So as of recently my hard drive has been slowly taking up storage space. Usually bite by bite "bleed style". Until it takes up multiple gigs of space until my drive is full. I've disable restore points and turned off hibernation mode. I don't have much of anything on the drive besides OS and a few games. For example. I'll click on properties. Storage will be 219,793,846,272 then immediately refresh and it will be 219,793,546,100. Then slowly keep draining every second. Baffled as to what this could be.

Windows logs for example.

Shadow copy, temp files, hibernation file, the list goes on and on. It's normal for Windows to eat disk space. Windows Update will eat some each day or week as checks are made, updates installed and a rollback is down by keeping the old copies.

This is not a static OS so while you could dig into this as many have done my advice is to read priors like https://superuser.com/questions/412573/something-eating-space-on-os-drive but keep in mind this is how Windows works.

BTW, it can continue till the disk is full. But!

"Storage will be

219,793,546,100"

That's 300K ish of space is pretty much nothing today as a web page could be that much.

Long ago I looked into this and yes, you can't deploy common versions of Windows without it slowly eating space. Microsoft was worse at this long ago but now with the usual Terabyte drive size the problem is one you'll find the PC fails long before it runs out of space for this eating space problem.

Re: disk getting full

Although it's not static, it certainly shouldn't be increasing until the disk is full.

Download the program from https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free and find where those data written are. That helps to find the cause.

There's no fix because this is how Windows works.
