Help with dual monitors

By mikepartsch ·
I have a Dell Dimension XPS with dual video output card (VGA and DVI), and I have an IBM T61 Thinkpad with advanced mini dock. I currently use a KVM switch to use a single 17 inch VGA monitor keyboard and mouse between the two systems.

I want to get a new 22 inch DVI monitor to share between the systems. Is there a KVM switch which will allow me to use my old 17 inch VGA and the new 22 inch DVI in order to have a dual monitor system between both the T61 (in the advanced dock) and my Dell desktop?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The KVM's that I have seen

are all single port based, such as DVI on a dual display (both monitors need to be DVI).

However, I had used a setup of multiple KVM's to do similar to what you want. A second KVM to control monitor only will work, and is much cheaper than spending the extra $$$ for a dual display KVM.

re: Help with dual monitors..... Take your pick.....

A quick search for "kvm dual monitor" turned up 458,000 hits. :0 Of course, they don't all allow "dual", but many links that I looked at, did. The few products that I looked at ranged anywhere from $100 to $300.

However, I'm not sure this setup would work with the laptop. Does the advanced mini-dock have dual output, or just one?

Just to mention

by The Scummy One In reply to re: Help with dual monito ...

most docks/port replicators have both a DVI and VGA port these days (not all though). And the video cards in most notebooks can use 2 monitors (not 3 though without an add-in card).
