King County wanted to achieve lean government operations and provide better service for its 1.9 million constituents. The King County IT department (KCIT) consolidated 28 data closets into one state-of-the-art datacenter and chose Windows Server with Hyper-V virtualization technology and Microsoft system center datacenter solutions to build a virtualized environment and a private cloud to provide cost-effective Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) capabilities to departments. KCIT now provisions a virtual machine in two hours, compared to three months for a physical server, and it costs 40 percent less.
