Iowa Workforce Development (IWD), one of the largest of Iowa's 39 state agencies, links job placement and skill development into a system of lifelong learning and opportunity. Their challenges are to reduce risk of security breaches and malware infections on public-use systems, expand availability of agency services to all 99 counties in the state of Iowa and simultaneously reduce total overhead costs of offering those services to support broader cost-cutting initiatives necessitated by state and federal budget cuts. IWD implemented a VMware View virtual desktop environment that users access through partner organizations' public PC hardware. The results of implementing VMware were reduced costs by $6.5 million, delivered richer menu of critical services to Iowans, it reduced desktop support calls by 80% and reduced risk of malware.
