The Korean Register of Shipping (KRS), which specializes in shipbuilding and marine engineering, completed the database encryption project in compliance with the privacy act. KRS weighed up three solutions: column-level encryption, Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)-based DataBase (DB) encryption and a dedicated appliance. KRS was clear that its first priority was to ensure a rapid response to the new law without changing the applications and DB that it had already installed. After thoroughly reviewing the options available, KRS narrowed down the candidates to two finalists: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 TDE and Vormetric's file encryption appliance. KRS realized the benefits of TDE for itself once the encryption project had been completed. DB encryption increased the work efficiency and productivity of both developers and DB administrators.
