    THE CHALLENGES FACING SECURITY TOOLS

Implementing SIEM and other security systems runs into various hurdles: lack of staff, knowledge gaps, inadequate log sources, inconsistent data quality, alert fatigue, and failing to catch serious attacks.

Lack of staff: Operating modern security systems requires personnel with a high level of expertise. They need to be able to gather data from a wide range of data sources, analyze logs, respond to incidents, and monitor the security perimeter. Unfortunately, those resources are in short supply. According to the World Economic Forum, there is a shortfall of nearly four million cybersecurity professionals. It is a seller’s market. Those with the skills in demand are constantly being headhunted. Those that can obtain them typically have to pay top dollar.

Knowledge gaps: Those entering the workforce are often armed with the latest skills but are missing know-how of systems that can date back several decades. Factor in the baby boomer generation retiring in large numbers each year, knowledge gaps in data centers are becoming more apparent.

Inadequate log sources: Lack of availability of comprehensive log sources is a common problem in security. Systems can analyze certain sources but not others. The problem is sometimes due to integration. The diversity of data sources makes it difficult to bring them all together to be analyzed within one platform. The consequence is security analysis done against incomplete data, false alerts, and missed threats.
