The study of heritable modifications in gene expression or cellular phenotype that arise without changing the underlying DNA sequence. These modifications are a result of chemical modifications to the DNA molecule itself or to the histone proteins around which DNA is wrapped. These modifications can be influenced by environmental factors and can have a significant impact on gene regulation, development and different biological processes.
