Quick Glossary: Video Streaming

Not too long ago, creating a video for general consumption required an expensive camera, expensive software, and trained personnel. Advancements in technology and technique provide new, less-expensive options for creating, recording, and broadcasting video. With the use of an open-source video encoder, some basic know-how, simple cloud-based software, and a computer, anyone can create, stream, and broadcast a high-resolution, professional video with a few mouse clicks.

This quick glossary, written by Mark W. Kaelin and Kara Sherrer for TechRepublic Premium, defines common video streaming terms to help you get up to speed on this technology.

    Chroma subsampling

A common practice for encoding and compressing images and videos by using less chroma information than luminescent information. In other words, the process reduces the amount of data required to record an image or video by reducing the amount of color information collected. For the most part, the human eye can’t see the difference.
