Hiring Kit: Video Game Producer

Even for the smallest and most independent developers, creating a video game requires the coordination of designers, programmers, testers, artists, musicians, animators, and a multitude of other talented personnel. Getting all these moving parts to work together, synchronize their production, and do it on time and on budget is the role of the video game producer.

This customizable hiring kit, written by Mark W. Kaelin for TechRepublic Premium, provides a framework your business can use to find the right person for the job. The kit includes salary details, a job description, interview questions, and a job advert.

DETERMINING FACTORS, DESIRABLE PERSONALITY TRAITS, AND SKILLSETS

The producer must also understand the video gaming industry and the product development life cycle associated with game creation. Successful producers can anticipate future bottlenecks in production based on technological limitations, staffing shortages, or missing hardware and software tools. The producer will have to mitigate these potential bottlenecks, probably several times during a project’s cycle.

If certain hardware or software will be needed to complete a project two years from now, for example, the producer should be able to anticipate the need, plan to supply the equipment or software needed, and keep the project running on time. The skillset and job role for the producer can be both physically and mentally taxing. Successful candidates will likely have significant experience and demonstrable fortitude.

A distinction can be made between internal and external producers. Internal ones work directly with developers, artists, animators, musicians, and the rest of the creative staff to organize and coordinate production schedules, goals, and deliverables. External producers often work for the publisher and coordinate with internal producers on goals and deliverables from the development team. External producers may also be responsible for marketing plans. When recruiting producers, you should designate internal versus external job roles.
