Hardware Decommissioning Policy
Every hardware device used by an organization has a finite lifespan or viable period of use, and the retirement of old gadgets and the acquisition of new ones is a part of life with technology.
This customizable policy, written by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, provides guidelines for the appropriate removal and disposal of all technological hardware used by a company. It covers scenarios in which hardware is donated, given away, or intended for recycling and destruction.

DECOMMISSIONING RESPONSIBILITIES
Decommissioning of hardware (whether due to obsolescence, failure, or another reason) will be the jurisdiction of the IT department, which will work with any related owners/stakeholders (e.g., finance, if this involves an accounting system, HR if it is a payroll server, or employees themselves if it involves a BYOD device). The IT department will also be responsible for owning and carrying out this policy and updating it as necessary.
