Make your monitoring checks as comprehensive as possible and use a logical flow to determine how best to identify issues. For instance, don’t assume that you can only use ping monitoring to determine whether a system is down. It may be running but not reachable. For example, an external system hosted in the cloud might not respond to ping checks yet still function correctly if your connectivity problem is caused by an upstream router issue. Conversely, an internal system may be pingable but in a bad state due to resource overload. In that case, a successful ping check will miss a valid problem.
