Severe Weather and Emergency Policy

Numerous instances of disaster scenarios outside organizational control have affected companies and their personnel as of late, with disastrous results. This includes hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes.

Knowing when to close the business in the face of a disaster is only one side of the coin. Determining whether and how long to remain open is also important, given that it can be costly to pay employees when the business is shut down.

This customizable policy, written by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, provides guidelines for companies to use when responding to severe weather activity and emergencies.

The company will establish a web portal containing emergency-related details and/or an emergency telephone hotline with an associated voice mailbox which employees can use to check on company status, which all staff should do whenever there is questionable weather or an emergency event.

This web portal should be secured and restricted only to authorized users to keep company details private. HR will be responsible for maintaining this portal and/or the associated hotline voicemail message.

The details provided should include the current date, whether the company or one of its locations remains open or closed and, if closed, the estimated time involved.
