Configuration Management Policy
Configuration management is the smart way to administer IT assets since it permits the implementation of a standard, consistent and predictable environment so existing systems can be maintained with ease and new systems can be installed with speed.
This policy, created by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, provides guidelines for applying effective, secure and reliable configuration management techniques, whether in test, development or production environments. It includes instructions regarding the development, maintenance and evolution of these processes.
The policy is not intended to focus on the specific technical aspects of configuration management products. That’s the responsibility of the related vendors and their training/documentation. Rather, these guidelines focus on the processes behind successful configuration management.

THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Configuration management software and strategies should be devised, supported and updated by appropriate individuals only (CM personnel). The configuration management environment will be referred to as the CM environment.
CM personnel will be trained on the involved software/systems before implementation.
IT staff will inventory all software and hardware (or use existing records) before devising a CM strategy in order to establish full awareness of the environment.
CM personnel will define services in the organization and plan the CM environment based on them, as well as IT assets.
