Data Governance Policy

Data governance is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ measure in organizations as there is a growing concern around the globe that unregulated use of data can result in serious privacy violations, among other issues. That’s why data governance has topped the agenda in many continents as more efforts are being put in place to provide standards that will guide how businesses should use and manage personal information.

This customizable policy, created by Franklin Okeke for TechRepublic Premium, outlines the necessary measures and standards that will enhance organizations’ data governance efforts.

This policy also complements our Data Governance Checklist.

    Featured text from the policy:

    1. GOVERNANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Chief data officer: The CDO is responsible for leading an organization’s overall data strategy and governance. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including defining data policies, ensuring compliance with data regulations, driving data-driven decision-making, and optimizing data management practices across the organization.

Data owner: This person is responsible for overseeing and managing a specific set of data within an organization. This role involves defining data access policies, determining who can and cannot access the data, setting data retention periods, and ensuring compliance with relevant data privacy regulations.

Data stewards: They are responsible for the quality and integrity, implementation, and enforcement of data management within their divisions. Data stewards are also responsible for classifying and approving the access, under delegation from a data owner, based upon the appropriateness of the user’s role and the intended use. Where necessary, approval from the data owner may be required prior to authorization of access.
