Wearable Device Policy
Wearable devices are becoming more common as a result of technological advancements and new capabilities. These devices may exist in the form of clothing, watches, or eyewear and can serve as standalone gadgets or may link to another device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
This Wearable Device Policy, created by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, is designed to protect company data and staff by outlining the acceptable use of these devices and ensuring employees abide by the guidelines documented herein.

PROCUREMENT OF COMPANY-OWNED WEARABLE DEVICES
Depending on an employee’s role, the organization may purchase and provide end users with wearable devices that apply to the execution of their job duties.
When the organization provides an end user with a wearable device, if extended internet access capabilities are needed (such as while traveling or out of range from organizational Wi-Fi access points), the company will also purchase a corresponding smartphone, cellular voice, and/or data service for device usage.
Managers may request wearable devices and smartphones for users within their department. Only manager-level employees and above may request wearable devices and/or smartphones as well as any corresponding service implementations. Managers must complete Appendix A for each end user for whom they want to request such equipment. The completed form must be submitted to the IT director for approval.
The IT department manager is responsible only for identifying compatible platforms, purchasing equipment, and supporting organization-provided and authorized devices. The IT department manager is not responsible for determining employee eligibility or allocating funds to pay for the devices, accessories, and/or service fees. Requesting managers must allocate funds from their department’s operating budget (where applicable) to cover costs arising from the device request.
