Windows Administrator’s PowerShell Script Kit
To assist Windows administrators with repetitive or mundane tasks, Microsoft developed a scripting language called PowerShell many years ago. Built upon the .NET framework, PowerShell lets you run the same tasks as the GUI, but with better controls and the capability of scheduling tasks or performing automation-related functions. It can also provide customized information and find things more rapidly than hunting through the GUI.
To introduce you to PowerShell — or to further your existing knowledge base — Scott Matteson, writing for TechRepublic Premium, has collected 21 PowerShell scripts for common Active Directory tasks, like creating accounts, checking for account lockouts and finding domain administrators. These scripts are intended to be run on domain controllers, meaning Windows servers.

EDITING THE POWERSHELL SCRIPTS
You can edit these on your Windows system with Notepad or a text-editing alternative, and you can also use the Windows PowerShell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) executable found in the same location as the Windows PowerShell icon.
PowerShell ISE not only allows you to edit scripts but see them executed, and it provides a handy command glossary.
Notepad++ is another strongly recommended option for editing scripts; like PowerShell ISE, it color-codes different functions, such as remarks and commands. It also shows you line numbers, which are useful when troubleshooting errors or following instructions in this guide. Best of all, Notepad++ has a powerful macro engine which can come in handy for making extensive changes.
