WordPress Security Checklist

Stories of virus and malware infections, data loss, system compromises, and unauthorized access dominate headlines, and your WordPress website may be contributing to the problem.

Therefore, it is vital to protect your WordPress site and your data, readers, users, and company by regularly auditing your WordPress site’s security configurations.

Fortunately, checklists are proven tools that help practitioners consistently complete expert behaviors. While not foolproof, checklists eliminate many common errors. It’s important to introduce a corresponding checklist into your WordPress security auditing routine.

This guide and the accompanying checklist, created by Erik Eckel for TechRepublic Premium, can help.

    WORDPRESS SECURITY BEST PRACTICES

Begin by confirming the website’s domain name is properly registered and scheduled for renewal. Always use hosting providers that follow recommended best practices for server security, including regular updating and patching.

Next, turn your attention to your own WordPress account. Review and confirm two-step authentication and all supporting recovery options are properly set up and valid. Then, review and confirm all user accounts possess appropriate permissions. Be sure to remove legacy accounts that are no longer needed, too.

Regularly change user, administrator, and SFTP passwords. Insist that passwords meet complexity requirements, as well. Automated attacks are too widespread and consistent to permit any leniency.

Audit the WordPress site’s authorized social media account and application logins. Remove any logins that are no longer needed, and use the opportunity to also reset social media and third-party program passwords.
