DESY’s New Storage Architecture for Data Taking and Analysis in Photon Science

DESY, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, is one of the world’s leading particle accelerator research centers. DESY implemented a new IT architecture based on IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Elastic Storage Server (ESS). With the recent extension of the PETRA III accelerator, new and faster detectors are used for the data acquisition. This is highly demanding for the underlying storage. The new system needs to handle more than 20 gigabyte per second at peak performance in order to enable scientists worldwide to gain faster insights into the atomic structure of novel semiconductors, catalysts, biological cells and other samples.
