Data mining deals with the discovery of hidden knowledge, unexpected patterns and new rules from large databases. Data mining is often defined as finding hidden information in a database. Alternatively it has been called exploratory data analysis, data driven discovery and deductive learning. Data mining essentially provides pattern-based retrieval, in which a pattern in the data is first discovered, and then that pattern is used to present information (the pattern itself or outlier data, perhaps) to the user.
