LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and WiMAX (Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access) are the two technologies poised to dominate next generation mobile networks. There is a strong competition between LTE & WiMAX technologies with WiMAX being ahead due to availability of standards through IEEE 802.16 and is up and running but lacks in substantial roll out plans due to cost. LTE upgrades from 3G networks are being carried out relatively faster. This paper studies the technical similarities and differences between WiMAX and LTE. Both technical and nontechnical aspects have been explored. The authors have attempted to make a comparative study between the two technologies to understand them better.
