A void handling technique is an important issue for a geographic routing in wireless sensor networks and ad hoc networks. However, since most of the methods handling the communication voids take heuristic approaches when selecting a next forwarder, the performance of a routing protocol is limited accordingly. In addition, it is difficult to set optimal parameter values in dynamic networking environments. In this paper, the authors propose an analytic framework to derive the probability that a node detours successfully the void area it faces.
