A MMKP based Heuristic for Quality Enhanced Scalable Video Streaming Over Wireless Networks

Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is a very promising encoding technique that adapts to streaming video over wireless networks with bandwidth fluctuations. This paper proposes a Bandwidth Aware Layered Streaming Algorithm (BALSA), a MMKP (Multi-dimensional Multiple-choice Knapsack Problem) based GHPMH (Gradational Hull Pareto Minimization Heuristic) to stream scalable video to heterogeneous users with different client's display under bandwidth limitations so as to maximize the average video quality over all the streams. Using extensive simulation the authors show that their algorithm finds solutions which are close to the optimal (within 1 db) under realistic conditions with reduced computational complexity.
