Modern distribution systems are operated closer to the voltage stability boundaries due to the ever increasing load demand and are prone to voltage collapse even for a small change in load pattern. Capacitors are commonly used in distribution systems to minimize line losses and improve the voltage profile. A new algorithm for optimal locations and sizing of static and/or switched shunt capacitors, with a view to enhance voltage stability is presented in this paper. Test results on 33 and 69-node distribution systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.
